7 New Cameras that Debuted at Photokina 2016

Photokina is the world’s largest photography show in the world and camera manufacturers brought the heat to Cologne, Germany last week! Below is a quick rundown of announcements from the major camera manufacturers, but keep in mind that these newer cameras may not yet be available, and if they are available, may not yet be supported by tethering software such as Lightroom or Capture One. Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

Canon has released the 5D Mark IV DSLR which is an outstanding still photography option and an able 4K-capable video machine. This multimedia maven offers a newly developed 30.4MP full-frame CMOS sensor paired with the DIGIC 6+ image processor in order to balance fine detail and resolution with low-light performance and sensitivity. It is able to work within a native range of ISO 100-32000, which can then be expanded to an impressive ISO 50-102400, for sharp, low-noise images in a variety of conditions. Along with these improvements to image quality, users will enjoy a performance boost across the board with an enhanced AF system, built-in Wi-Fi, NFC, and GPS, and much more. In order to deliver detailed images quickly and effectively the 5D Mark IV leverages the power of the DIGIC 6+ image processor, which can handle up to 7 frames per second during continuous shooting. It also uses a 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor to evaluate the scene and subjects for accurate exposures under a variety of different lighting conditions. An improved 61-point High Density Reticular AF furthers the camera’s speed by tracking and locking onto subjects quickly and accurately for tack sharp photos. A new AF area select button is now available as well for near immediate access to this setting. Release Date: October 2016 Tethering Support: Yes  

Sony A99 Mark II

Positioned as the flagship A-mount camera from Sony, the Alpha a99 II DSLR Camera combines the power of a full-frame 42.4MP Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor and a BIONZ X image processor with front-end LSI to create outstanding images at expanded sensitivities up to ISO 102400 and record UHD 4K video. The a99 II is designed for speed, with an ergonomic body design and redeveloped shutter able to hit 12 fps, with full AF and AE capabilities. It also uses a Hybrid Phase Detection AF System that combines a 79-point dedicated AF sensor with a 399-point on-chip focus system for fast, accurate focusing in all conditions. And, for video, a new S&Q Motion setting permits the capture of Full HD video at a variety of frame rates ranging from 1-120 fps. Another huge advantage of the a99 II is a 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE stabilization system which is able to compensate for about 4.5 stops of shutter speed for sharper images. The camera also offers both a 0.5″ 2.36m-dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF and a 3.0″ 1,228.8k-dot rear LCD that can tilt upwards 134° and downwards 180° as well as rotate 270° for working in a variety of positions. On top of all of these features, the camera offers built-in Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth which expands the cameras operability and it can output 14-bit raw files. Panasonic Lumix GH5

  Panasonic announced that it is in development of a new Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) Camera Lumix GH5 that is capable of recording smooth, high-precision 4K 60p/50p and faithful 4:2:2 10-bit 4K video for the first time in the world. It also features ‘6K PHOTO’ which extracts approx.18-megapixel still images from ultra-high-quality video with approx. 9 times the pixel count of Full HD. Fujifilm GFX 50S

Say hello to the Fujifilm GFX: a brand new mirrorless medium format camera, complete with brand new GF mount lens system. With a whopping 51.4-megapixels across the sensor’s 43.8 x 32.9mm surface (that’s 1.7x larger than a full-frame DSLR), one of Fujifilm’s goals is to offer high-resolution capture in any number of ratios, from 1:1 through to 3:4 and even 16:9. The camera is small scale, thanks to being mirrorless by design, with a body-only weight of around 800g. In addition to a vari-angle LCD screen for waist-level work, including vertical tilt like on the X-T2, the GFX 50S comes complete with a viewfinder included in the box. But it’s not just any old viewfinder: it can rotate through vertical and horizontal angles – ideal if a still life is setup at an obscure angle, for example. At launch there will be three lenses – 63mm f/2.8, 32-64mm f/4.0 and 120mm f/4.0 – with an additional three set to join the line-up in the year following availability. Fujifilm X-T2

Offering a more conventional form factor and packing in UHD 4K video recording, Fujifilm’s X-T2 Mirrorless Digital Camera certainly aims to fill the needs of many working professionals. Equipped with a 24.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS III image sensor and the X-Processor Pro Engine, users will be able to capture finely detailed imagery quickly and with low noise at sensitivities up to ISO 51200. The powerful combination permits rapid image capture at up to 8 fps with full AF tracking or at up to 14 fps using the silent electronic shutter. In terms of AF, the X-T2 uses an Intelligent Hybrid system with 325 points that ensure accurate, fast tracking of subjects in all modes. Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II

The Olympus O-MD E-M1 Mark II is arriving later this year and will offer an amazing 18FPS with continuous focus, as well as 60FPS on locked focus. Images will result to full-resolution, RAW, or JPG image files. The enhanced AF capability will also enable photographers to record 14 frames before the shutter release is fully pressed, if they are in Pro Capture mode. The enhanced AF tracking capabilities will also feature a 121 cross type AF points across the screen. This combines standard contrast detection and phase detection systems for better results. The Olympus O-MD E-M1 Mark II will feature a 5-axis in-body stabilization system that supports photographers with its 6.5 stops of shake-compensation, for both still and action modes. The camera will include several video modes, namely 4K, Cinema 4K, Full HD, and HD, which will have 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60FPS, respectively. The camera will have the ability to record 4K video with data rates at 237Mbps when in 24FPS mode. Great news for outdoor photographers, as the Olympus O-MD E-M1 Mark II will also feature a new battery that promises to last 40% longer than its predecessor. Nikon D5

Qualifying itself as the flagship model in Nikon’s DSLR lineup, the D5 is positioned as a truly fast, highly precise machine for professional photographers. Revolving around a full-frame, FX-format 20.8MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 5 image processor, this workhorse touts an impressive 12 fps continuous shooting rate with full-time AF and AE, an expandable sensitivity range that goes up to ISO 3280000, and 4K UHD video recording at 30 fps. Matching the imaging versatility, the Nikon D5 is also characterized by its redeveloped Multi-CAM 20K 153-point AF system, which incorporates 99 cross-type sensors for refined precision when tracking moving subjects or working in difficult lighting conditions. This model features dual CF memory card slots, to provide versatility in file handling during shooting, and a range of selectable raw file sizes can also be used depending on output needs. Designed to keep up with the fastest subjects and handle the most difficult working conditions, the Nikon D5 is an advanced DSLR well-suited to the most extreme multimedia workflows. Echoing the robust set of imaging capabilities, the D5 is of course equally refined in its handling and physical design attributes. A rear 3.2″ 2.36m-dot touchscreen LCD monitor afford clean, clear playback and live view shooting, along with an intuitive means for navigating the menu system. The camera chassis is constructed from magnesium alloy and is both dust- and weather-sealed to enable working in the harshest of environments. Additionally, lending an air of familiarity to the design, a slew of configurable Function buttons are available across the body, and an integrated vertical grip supports working in both horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.
