Tech Tip: Using Your Air Remote Mobile Tethering App – Saving RAW to Card, Sending Just JPEG

Bio: Catherine Slye is a fine art photographer and manages all technical support for Tether Tools.

The Air Direct Wireless Tethering System allows you to tether wirelessly to your computer. Are you now wanting to tether to your mobile device? The Air Direct has a mobile app called the Air Remote Mobile Tethering App to help you out with that.

*Important:* The Air Remote Mobile Tethering App supports Nikon and Canon cameras. Please check the Compatibility Chart here: https://tethertools.com/product/air-direct-wireless-tethering-system/#compatibility

Are you a photographer who only shoots in JPEG? If so, set your Image Quality to JPEG in either the camera or the app, and simply turn on View Thumbnails in your Air Remote Mobile Tethering App Settings. Your JPEG images will save to the card in the camera and transfer for previewing. Make sure you are in the Capture View for optimal previewing. The Album View will show all files saved on the card in the camera.

But if this isn’t you – you shoot in RAW – then read on. Let’s make sure you’re set for success.

The ideal set up for optimal image transfer, is to shoot in RAW + JPEG small. RAW files are too large to render clearly on a mobile device and will transfer much slower, slowing down your workflow. We want to save the RAW files to the card in the camera and only transfer the JPEG to your mobile device for previewing. To do this, please follow these two steps:

First, you’ll want to make sure your Image Quality is set for RAW + JPEG, I recommend selecting the smallest JPEG option available. This ensures a small file for quick transfer. Image Quality can be set in either the camera or in the Air Remote Mobile Tethering App after connecting to your camera.

Second, we want to go to the Settings tab in the Air Direct Mobile Tethering app. Remember: When the White Dot is to the right ->  this means On.  It’s always, Right = On and Left = Off.

Turn ON the top two; View Thumbnails and Ignore RAW Files.  This will save the RAW image to the card in the camera and allow the JPEG to transfer for previewing. Make sure you view your thumbnails in the Capture view. The Album view will show all files – both RAW and JPEG – on the card in the camera.

Mobile Tethering Tips:

  • When you installed the Air Remote App onto your mobile device, did you give it the permissions it asked for?
  • Make sure you re-format your card in the camera and you’re only pointing to one card.
  • Does your mobile device have a data plan? You may want to turn it off while tethering to avoid any interference with the Wi-Fi connection.
  • Did you get a firmware update notice? Make sure you update with fully charged batteries prior to connecting to your camera.
