Collaborating on Set: Adding a Monitor for Clients and Assistants

You’ve connected your camera to your laptop with a TetherPro USB cable. Your laptop is secure atop a Tether Table Aero. You’re shooting tethered like a pro, seeing images on a larger screen than the tiny LCD on the back of your camera. But could your workflow be more efficient? Could you go bigger?

If you’re in studio you likely have the space to go with a second screen, and one bigger than your laptop. Create the best possible tethering experience for both your craft and your client by adding a monitor into your workflow. Tether Tools makes it easy to mount a monitor to a stand with our VESA and non-VESA compliant monitor mounts and it’s simple to mirror your computer screen to a monitor on a photo shoot. About monitors, they’re more affordable than you think. At under $250 USD, the ViewSonic VP2468 is recommended by Tether Tools Pro Clay Cook who calls the 24-inch monitor a “vital viewing station for my clientele on location and in studio.”

Benefits of Adding a Monitor

  • Large monitor allows clients to stay part of the shoot without hovering over a photographer’s shoulder at the tethered laptop
  • Image on the monitor is a solid representation of the final product and a stunning way to see the images come to life, impressing clients
  • When shooting solo photographers can use laptop for other tasks while viewing images on larger monitor above

Not Sure Where to Start?

Determine Your VESA Compatability

First, if your monitor has the common 75×75 or 100x100mm VESA configuration, all you’ll need is a Rock Solid VESA Monitor Mount. If you plan on mounting the monitor in studio on a stand, we recommend the VESA Studio Monitor Mount for Stands. If you’re looking for something more streamlined for on the go, consider the Local Monitor and Go Monitor Mounts.

Making Your Large Monitor Compatible with the 100x100mm VESA Configuration

Now, if you have a monitor but it has a larger VESA configuration than 100x100mm you’ll need a Rock Solid VESA Adapter Plate. Once added, your monitor will be compatible with the Rock Solid VESA Monitor Mounts and other common VESA grip gear.

iMacs and Cinema Displays

If you have an iMac or Cinema Display that you want to mount as part of your workflow, first determine if your iMac stand is removable or not. For a list of compatible iMacs visit the product listing on www.TetherTools.com. Once you’ve added either the Rock Solid VESA iMac Stand Adapter or Rock Solid VESA iMac Direct Adapter to your iMac, your iMac will be compatible with the Rock Solid VESA Monitor Mounts and other common VESA grip gear.

Add a Quick Release System for Portability

Do you use your monitor in multiple locations and want a quick and easy way to connect to both a stand and desk? Add on a Rock Solid VESA Quick Release Locking Base for each additional location that you need to mount your monitor. When used with the Rock Solid VESA Quick Release System, this Locking Base provides an extra mounting base for a VESA compliant monitor.
